Elon Musk’s X - formerly Twitter - appears to be suffering a global outage as thousands of users of the platform across several countries reported issues this morning.
Downdetector, which tracks online outages, confirmed that X is experiencing issues as 70,000 outage reports had been made from multiple countries since 5.30am GMT.
The outage was confirmed to be affecting countries including the UK, US and India, with the site showing a message reading “Welcome to Twitter” instead of users’ normal feed.
Netblocks, the global internet tracking entity, said the “significant international outage” did not appear to be associated with any country-level blocks or filtering.
Users of the platform’s blue tick premium subscription service, X Pro, were also facing issues, with their feeds showing the message “Waiting for posts”.
As of 7am GMT, X appeared to be returning to normal for some users.
The reason for the outage remains unclear.

In March, X experienced a massive outage shortly after a round of layoffs that saw over 200 employees leave the company.
During this outage, users on the site saw what seemed to be a welcome page, as if they were not following anyone on the platform yet.
“Welcome to Twitter! This is the best place to see what’s happening in your world. Find some people and topics to follow now,” the message read.
Many complained that they could not use X normally, facing problems when they tried to access links, images, and videos on the site.

Dec 28 (Reuters) - Twitter Inc suffered a major outage on Wednesday, leaving tens of thousands of users globally unable to access the popular social media platform or use its key features for several hours before services appeared to come back online.
The incident is the social media site's first apparent widespread service disruption since billionaire Elon Musk took over Twitter as CEO in late October.
Downdetector, a website that tracks outages through a range of sources including user reports, showed more than 10,000 affected users from the United States, about 2,500 from Japan and about 2,500 from the UK at the peak of the disruption.

The reason behind the global outage remained unclear. X did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment.
This isn’t the first time the platform has experienced a major outage this year.
The microblogging platform owned by multibillionaire Elon Musk has been hit by widespread technical problems several times, including in March, July, and most recently in October.
In March, X experienced a major outage shortly after a round of layoffs that saw over 200 employees leave the company.
In another outage in July, thousands reported an inability to retrieve tweets, missing timelines and their followers disappearing.
This came after Mr Musk said the platform was imposing temporary reading limits for users of 8,000 posts for verified accounts, 800 for unverified, and 400 for new unverified.
In the more recent October outage, many X users were either unable to log in to their accounts or get online at all.
Those who could log in and see posts on their feed saw tweets as empty or not showing properly, while some found that only retweets appeared to be broken

Dec 21 (Reuters) - Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, was restored globally early Thursday, with over 77,000 U.S. users facing issues at the peak of the outage.
Users in Canada, Britain, France and other countries reported issues with accessing both X and X Pro, earlier known as TweetDeck.
Over 7,000 users in Canada and Britain experienced issues with the platform, according to Downdetector data.
Downdetector tracks outages by collating status reports from several sources including users.
The cause of the outage, which began a little after 12 am ET(0500 GMT), is not yet known, and emails to X's communications and support teams bounced back.
Users on X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, experienced an inability to view posts, receiving a "Welcome to X!" message. X Pro users encountered a message that said "Waiting for posts."
The social media platform faced upheaval and uncertainty following Musk's $44 billion acquisition, leading to layoffs, including numerous engineers responsible for fixing and preventing service outages, sources have previously told Reuters.
Twitter Down Sparks Avalanche of Jokes, Memes: 'Welcome to X'
Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, was down for about an hour on December 21, a temporary outage that sparked widespread mockery by users.
For a little less than an hour, the platform did not allow users to refresh content, only showing a message on the platform that read: "Welcome to X! This is the best place to see what's happening in your world. Find some people and topics to follow now."
It was the latest technical issue faced by the social media platform after external links were temporarily not working last week and the website went down for about 40 minutes on December 17. The Thursday outage, which led to a rise in the use of the hashtag #twitterdown, appeared to be a global blackout for X, which was frozen for thousands of users.
According to Downdetector, a website offering information about the real-time status of websites and social media platforms, there were 74,823 "down" reports for X at the peak of the website's outage as of 12:30 a.m. ET on Thursday. The reports came from users from the U.S., as well as countries like the U.K., Australia, France and India.
"Did twitter break? Welcome to X?," one user wrote, hinting at the many issues and controversies that have surrounded the social media platform since one of the most famous billionaires in the world took over. Musk completed the purchase of Twitter on October 27, 2022, for a total of $44 million.
